TYPES OF NETWORK AND INETRNET CONNECTIONS | NETWORKING-03

types-of-network, network

There are several types of networks. Some of them are: -

LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)

LAN

A network that connects a small number of machines in a relatively small geographical area.
It is also called Intranet.
These uses various topologies of architecture of networking.

WIDE AREA NETWORK (WAN)

A network that consists of large geographical area connecting multiple LAN or individual devices across different locations.
It is used to enable communication and data exchange between distant location often using various telecommunication technologies such as leased lines, satellite links, microwave links and Internet connection.

METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK (MAN)

It is a type of network that covers a large geographical area than a LAN but is smaller in scale than a WAN.
It typically covers a city or large campus area connecting multiple lands within that geographic region.
MAN are designed to provide high speed connectivity and data exchange between various locations that are relatively close to each other such as different buildings within a university.

INTERNET CONNECTION

There are various technologies available that you can use to connect a home computer to the Internet.
some of them are: -

PHONE MODEM

A phone modem ((modulator demodulator) is a device used to convert digital data from a computer or other digital devices into analogue signals that can be transmitted over telephone lines and to convert incoming analogue signal back into digital data.
Modem allows computer to communicate with each other and with networks over standard telephone lines allowing for the transmission of data including text, images and even Internet connectivity.

DATA SUBSCRIBER LINE (DSL)

It is a type of broadband technology that enables high speed Internet access over existing telephone lines.
This technology allows data to be transmitted over the same copper lines that are traditionally used for voice telephone communication.
DSL provides much higher data transfer rates compared to other dialup connection.

CABLE MODEM

It is a networking device that provides high speed Internet access using the same coaxial cable infrastructure that delivers cable television signals.
It allows data transmission over cable tv lines allowing users to access the Internet at significantly faster speeds compared to traditional dialup connection.

BROADBAAND

This connection refers to high speed Internet connection that provides significantly faster data transfer rate some common types of broadband connection include: -
  • DSL
  • Cable Internet
  • Fiber Optic Internet
  • Satellite Internet
  • Wireless broadband
  • Cellular Data
